The temple is open throughout the day, and there is no entry fee. However, taking photographs inside the temple is strictly prohibited.

About Karni Mata Temple

This temple is one of the most famous tourist attractions for Indian as well as foreign travellers. Also, the exquisite architecture is the perfect mix of Rajput and Mughal structural design, with a little blend of Islamic design too. This makes this place more attractive and charming.  This temple is also known as “the Rat Temple” as 20,000 black rats live in this temple for thousands of years. This temple should be a must visit attraction when you are planning a Bikaner tour.  These holy rats are called kabbas, and many people travel great distances to pay their respects. The temple draws visitors from across India, especially during Navratri.

The temple is also known for its unique tradition of allowing rats to roam freely within its premises. These rats are believed to be the incarnations of the Charans and are considered to be sacred. They are fed and cared for by the temple priests, and they are not harmed or disturbed in any way.

Karni Mata Temple is 2.8 km from Bikaner, in Rajasthan, India. These holy rats are called kabbas, and many people travel great distances to pay their respects. The temple draws devotees from many parts of India, especially during Navratri.

Karni Mata Temple Timings and Entry Fee

Karni Mata Temple is open from 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day. The entry fee for the temple is free.

What Makes The Temple Unique?

The Temple is unique because it is the only remaining standing temple of the ancient city of Jerusalem. It is also the holiest site for the three major monotheistic religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The Temple is seen as a symbol of faith and a reminder of the power of religion.

Legend Associated With Karni Mata Bikaner

Karni Mata is revered as an incarnation of the goddess Durga and is believed to be the guardian deity of the royal family of Bikaner. She is also known as Nari Bai or Shri Nari and is sometimes referred to as Mata Karni or Karniji.

Karni Mata, who represented Shakti and maintained her celibacy, wed her younger sister to her husband, Depaji, in order to carry on his line. Depaji had four sons from her, Lakshman being the youngest. They were raised by Karniji as if they were her own.

Lakshman perished one day while taking a dip in a Kapil Sarovar in the close by Kolayat. She begged Karni Mata to revive Lakshman on behalf of her younger sister. Karni Mata then shut the doors and commanded that they not be opened while she raised the body with her hands and carried it to the location of the murti (inner sanctuary). She went to Yamraj, the deity of death, and pleaded for Lakshman’s resurrection. The death god enquired, “If so, how will the rebirth cycle operate? What law will it change to?” As a result, Karni Mata vowed that her family would no longer visit Yamraj. “They will live wherever I do. They will remain with me after they pass away.”

So that when human Charanas from her lineage die, they will be reborn as Kaaba and live close by her inside the temple, and when Kaaba dies, they will again be reborn as human Charanas, Karni Mata chose the embodiment of the Kaaba.  In this way, Charan Avatar is distinct from this conventional notion of Hindu reincarnation in that the jaati is preserved between births despite being in variously varied corporeal forms.
