This prince, son of Mirza Raja Man Singh, defied societal norms and married Mariam, a foreigner who resided in the magnificent palace nestled amidst picturesque surroundings known as Kishan Bagh. The ruins of Mariam Mahal stand as a testament to their love story. Located at the foothills of Nahargarh Fort Hill, I have had the pleasure of hiking through Kishan Bagh's sandy dunes multiple times. It was during one such adventure that I captured an enchanting picture, forever etching this place in my memory. In January 2016, the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) approached Pradip Krishen with an intriguing proposition. They took him to a vast barren land nestled at the base of Nahargarh Hills, known as Kishan Bagh in Jaipur. Seeking his expert opinion on reshaping this desolate area into a public park, JDA hoped to rectify their previous failed attempt at creating a cactus garden. Unfazed by their prior disappointment, Pradip Krishen drew inspiration from his experiences working on Rao Jodha Rock Park in Jodhpur and envisioned transforming Kishan Bagh into a natural desert landscape reminiscent of Roee - the captivating desert expanse found in western Rajasthan. This arid terrain is characterized by an abundance of small shrubs like Seenio, Bui, and Kheemp that dominate its awe-inspiring beauty.
Seenio, the preferred food of Chinkara deer in Kishan Bagh Jaipur, transforms from dry to green with the return of moisture in the air. Similar to the monsoon forests of Aravali hills, Kheemp grows around sand dunes and reaches a height of 7-10 feet. With its white cotton-like growth, it belongs to the Amaranthus family. Amidst all this, one can’t ignore the Munj grass found in the semi-arid landscape. Since my ancestors hail from Western Rajasthan, I have seen locals using dried shrubs in villages for lighting a fire stove – Seenio/सींणीओ. There is more to the flora of western Rajasthan than the ones listed above. There are trees like Khejri, Rohida, Kumatiyo, Akada, and Dhatura to name a few.
